Take One More Step

by Tom Reilly

When life weighs you down
As you know it must,
And you bend
To the weight of the load;
Straighten your back,
Stiffen your jaw, and
Take one more step.

When you trip and fall
As many have done,
And rising
Is the toughest of all;
Swallow the pain,
Stand like an oak, and
Take one more step.

When burdens are great
As they often are,
And you ask
If it’s worth so much toil;
Feel struggle’s pain,
Follow your dream, and
Take one more step.

When luck slows you down
As it’s bound to do,
And worn down
By a cruel fickle fate;
Adjust your course,
Against the odds, and
Take one more step.

When failure shows up
As is part of life,
And awed
By the threat of defeat;
Persist in this trial,
Push through the fail, and
Take one more step.

When your goal is near
As it soon will be,
And you fear
It’s still beyond your grasp;
Stretch far your reach,
Stay true the course, and
Take one more step.

Take one more step
As you know you must
And reaching
The end of this journey;
Capture the thrill,
Claim your success, you
Took one more step.

  1. Love this. You should really publish your work. You are truly changing the world, one poem, book or just writing one at a time. Take the next step.
